A General View on Optical Recognition Character
Optical Character Recognition deals with the problem of recognizing optically processed characters. Optical recognition is performed offline after the writing and printing has been completed. Both hand –printed and printed characters are recognized, but the performance is directly dependent upon the quality of the input documents. The more constrained the input is, the better will be the performance of the ocr system.
The Present Day OCR System
The OCR machines became commercially available already in the 1950’s, and only a few ocr system had been sold upto 1986. The main reason for this was the cost of the systems .However, as hardware’s got cheaper by the day, ocr systems started to become available as software packages. Today a few thousand is the number of systems sold every week, and the cost of omnifont ocr has dropped with a factor of ten every other year for the last 6 years.

Optical Scanning
Optical scanning generally consists of a transport mechanism plus a sensing device that converts light intensity into gray levels. Printed documents consist of a black print on a white background. So when performing the ocr it is common practice to convert the multi level image into bilevel image of black and white. This process is known as thresholding which is performed on the scanner to save memory space and computational effort.
Location and segmentation
Segmentation is a process that determines the constituents of an image. It is important to locate the regions of the document where data have been printed and distinguish them from figure and graphic s. for e.g. mail sorting.
Useful Cases of OCR
The most common ocr system used for passport, bank documents is a machine known as MRZ. The MRZ is an ocr system which identifies people, numbers .The passport ocr is very helpful for security officer due to the sudden rise of terrorism. The security or emigration officer can identify people accordingly with this passport ocr system.
