Waterproof Dog Bed Buying Guide

Buying a waterproof dog bed requires more than just looking at the product description and making sure that it says “waterproof.” Just as there are different types of beds for people, the same thing can be said for your furry friend. Here are some suggestions on how to find the best bed for your pet.

How Big is Your Dog?

The first thing you should do is measure your dog. Do not use simple estimates because some dogs like to stretch out when they sleep, so take that into consideration. With regards to weight, the majority of beds are sized accordingly so you can find one that should fit him. To be on the safe side, use a weighing scale before buying a bed.

Sleeping Positions

What position does your dog sleep? Observe him first: does he like to curl up or extend his legs out? Some dogs sleep on their sides while others on their stomachs or their backs. It varies from dog to dog, and this will play a role in deciding what type of bed to buy. As a general rule however, it’s better to get a bed that’s too large than force him to sleep in a tight one.

What Types of Dog Beds are Available?

The simplest water resistant dog bed resembles pillows. They are available in different sizes and meant for various dog breeds including toy dogs to the large ones. In essence these are just oversized cushions for your pet to sleep on: there are no raised edges so your dog can just get on it and sleep. Because they’re basic and offer lots of room, they’re great for dogs that like to stretch out when they sleep.

There are also gel memory foam mattress and nest beds available, with the latter equipped with raised walls or edges your dog can curl up to. If your pet likes to sleep in enclosed spaces then nest beds are the most ideal. Different types are sold but the oval shape is the most common. But if your dog likes to extend his legs, beds with raised edges are not practical unless it’s large.

Whether it’s an organic latex mattress, memory foam or something else, in the end it’s your dog that’s going to decide if the bed is ideal or not. Some dogs are pickier than others, but you can make things easier for him by getting a bed that’s the right size.
