What to do if Your Printer is Broken?
Have you ever had to utter these words as you attempt to print off that 28th sheet of a business report? Your office printer is probably as old as the building, if it's anything like mine, it definitely needs replacing.
If you're in charge of replacing the printer, it can be pretty scary. There are so many models and brands out there, all vying for your attention with their technical names and fancy features. I know, for myself, I like to stick with brands I find reliable, brands I can trust. This manages to cut my big, scary list down to only several names. At the top of my list? Canon.
So you have a brand name, now all you need is to choose a model. Oops, another difficult issue to navigate. Well, not really. Canon released a multifunctional laser printer approximately two years ago, a replacement, or upgrade if you will, to it's previous model. This is called the imageCLASS MF8380Cdw. What that means? It's a commercially targeted laser printer.
So what do you get?
Well, lots of things. A printer first and foremost. That's where the Canon Imageclass MF8380CDW excels. It can print! In fact, it can print up to the speed of 21ppm (that's 21 pages per minute) in both monochrome and colour. So, good, it can do it's primary function, but what else? Well, it's also a copier and scanner. How do a copier and scanner differ? That's fairly simple, a copier will go from reading the document (or image) and printing it out, no real middle man. Scanning is more for the purposes of getting those documents into data. That could be simply to USB, or to email or even to a file share. Guess what, Canon Imageclass MF8380CDW scans to all of the above!
Will I Need Anything Else?
The simple answer is yes, eventually. Printers use paper, that's a foregone conclusion. So if you require it for printing out physical documentation you will use paper. The other thing, and this is only for laser printers, is a toner. This is what puts your data onto the physical page (similar to ink). The ImageClass series by Canon has different compatible toner cartridges. For the majority, the Canon 104 works (not all!). Before buying a cartridge you will need to check your printer's model number against the compatible toner cartridge. In the case of the MF8380Cdw, the Canon 104 cartridge is not compatible (aka the Canon 104 will not work!). It is, however, compatible with it's cousins:
• imageCLASS D420
• imageCLASS D480
• imageCLASS MF4150d
• imageCLASS MF4270dn
• imageCLASS MF4350d
• imageCLASS MF4370dn
• imageCLASS MF4690
• FAXPHONE L120
• FAXPHONE L90
So basically, don't buy an incompatible cartridge. At best you sit there for half an hour not understanding why it doesn't fit or why your printer is suddenly not working. At worse, you cause serious hardware issues and will have to replace parts, or even worse, the whole appliance! To reiterate, the simplest way to be sure it is correct is to read the compatibility section of most sale pages.
