Facts About an Organic Mattress You Need to Know First

Keep in mind that a high-quality organic mattress is a substantial investment but it is worth every penny considering the numerous benefits that come with its regular use. But before buying the mattress, here are a few things that you must know about the product.

Knowing the Components

Many organic mattresses are more expensive than their non-organic mattresses because of the multiple layers used in their manufacture. The best organic mattresses usually have two major layers of organic wool and cotton, which are combined for maximum comfort, support and durability.

Organic cotton is cultivated without applications of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and fertilizers, and without genetic modifications in any manner. For this reason, your risks for exposure to harmful chemical residues used in agriculture can be lessened – and you can sleep better with this thought in mind. You can even take it one step further by asking the salespeople for an unbleached organic cotton-filled mattress – unbleached organic cotton means that no harsh bleaches were used in its production.

Organic wool is used because of its excellent wicking property, which means it can keep away moisture from accumulating in the mattress; lanolin, a greasy yellow wax, is responsible for it.  You will feel cooler even when you have been sleeping on the mattress for several hours.  You must, however, be aware that since wool is an animal fiber, you have to wash the mattress at least once a year for maintenance purposes.

Most organic mattresses then consist of these layers:

• Non-organic latex foam for comfortable support

• Organic wool to provide a softer feel

• Organic cotton to cover the layers

Since not all organic mattresses are created equal to your unique needs and wants in a bed, you should ask as many relevant questions as possible.

Making Your Choice

Keep in mind, too, that the following tips in making your choice from among dozens of organic mattresses can also be used in choosing memory foam pillows and mattresses, even an elevated pet bed with organic layers.

• Ask about the organic nature of each component, which should be as near to 100% as possible.

• Ask for more details about each layer including its thickness, density and materials for a clearer idea of the relationship (i.e., benefits) between each component.

• Ask about the type of glue or stitching that holds the mattress together.

If possible, test the mattress in the store before having it delivered to your home or ask about the store’s return policy, guarantees, and warranties.
