Study Shows Online Counselling More Effective

With the increasing prevalence of Internet use, people are also turning to websites for answers to many of life’s troubling concerns, complaints and issues including mental health disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, and phobias). And thus was born online counselling, a venue for patients and healthcare providers from a wide range of disciplines to come together without actually being in the same room, same time zone, and even the same time.

Indeed, such is the effectiveness of web-based counselling that it has been called the future of therapy!

Comparative Study

With the increased popularity of web-based counselling services, researchers from the University of Zurich conducted a study about online therapy sessions. Six therapists were asked to participate in the study wherein they treated sixty-two patients diagnosed with moderate depression.  The patients were randomly divided into two groups – one group was provided with online depression counselling while the other group received face-to-face traditional therapy.

Each group, however, received eight sessions consisting of cognitive therapy techniques. In both groups, the patients’ depression values significantly fell but patients who received web-based counselling reported better results in comparison with patients who received traditional counselling.

• 53% of patients treated via online channels (e.g., emails and chats) were diagnosed as free of depression

• 50% of patients provided with face-to-face counselling were no longer diagnosed, too.

Even during follow-up sessions after the study, the recovery rate among patients treated online was still higher than that for patients who were provided with face-to-face therapy sessions – 57% for the former and 42% for the latter.

While the study was conducted for patients with depression, it is safe to assume that online crossdressing counselling can also be more effective than its traditional counterpart.  Bear in mind that cross dressing and depression can also go hand-in-hand in many instances, thus, addressing one issue will likely contribute to addressing the other issue.

Reasons for Effectiveness

According to the researchers, the higher degree of online counselling’s effectiveness partly lies in the “paper trail” – or its digital equivalent – that it generates. Basically, patients were able to refer to their correspondence with their therapists, when and where necessary, so that the advice can be kept fresh in their minds. But patients who received face-to-face counselling did not have the benefit of the paper trail and were more likely to quickly forget the advice they were given.

Of course, emphasis must be made that online therapy for depression, anxiety, and bereavement, among others, should just be a supplement to therapeutic care in other areas including lifestyle changes, coping mechanisms, and medications.
